Why the Oregon Vein Center?

Why the Oregon Vein Center? We formed the Oregon Vein Center five years ago to focus attention on the treatment of patients with problems of venous disease. In American medical schools and residency training programs very little time or emphasis is spent on venous disease. More 'important" diseases such as cancer, and heart disease are emphasized to the virtual exclusion of patients suffering the consequences of venous disease. This is unfortunate because thousands of patients suffer from chronic venous disease. Traditionally in the USA, surgeons have cared for patients with venous disease. They were trained to perform high ligation and stripping, and excision of clusters. They approached varicose veins like they would a cancerous growth using big incisions, lengthy operations, and prolonged recovery periods. One operation was used to treat almost everybody, a "one size fits all" approach. We frequently see patients who have been frightened by their friends or physicians, being told that vein surgery is very painful and disabling. Unfortunately, this was probably true at one time. Fortunately now the treatment of venous problems is much, much different than it used to be. We treat both patients who suffer from cosmetic concerns about spider veins on their face or legs, and we treat patients who suffer from symptomatic varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency Our goal is: - to minimize your discomfort,
- to minimize your down-time, and
- to perform the interventions with the best cosmetic result possible.
We are able to do this primarily in our office. We hope you will look carefully through this site for information to answer any questions you might have.
