Endovenous Laser Treatment

The ELT procedure is the relatively new technique for control of sapheno-femoral reflux.  Prior to the principle of endoluminal ablation the mainstay of treatment was high ligation and stripping of the greater saphenous vein, as well as the lesser saphenous vein.  Surgeons did try simple high ligation but the recurrence rate was much too high.  The first commercially available instrument used radiofrequency energy, that is, electrons, delivered by a specially designed "flower tip" catheter. This heated the wall of the vein "poaching" it like an egg. The technique works , but is associated with some complcations.  Dr Bone' of Spain was the first to used a laser "light guide" to deliver photons to the inside of the saphenous vein. The photons heat the blood which poaches the vein wall.  The results were just as good, but with fewer complications.

We use the Dornier 940 nm (nanometer) laser.  It was specifically designed to treat veins.  Blood has a great affinity for this particular wave length.  If you click on the Dornier link make sure you look at the product information, physician testimonials, and particularly the patient brochure links.

Ablation of the saphenous vein can be accomplished in our office using only tumescent anesthesia .  No incision in the groin.  No large ecchymoses in the thigh from avulsed veins.  Our patients love it!
